During my 10+ years with Terre des Langues, I am rarely so impressed with North Carolina as I am when I shuttle half a dozen bright-eyed, curious, and jet-lagged French or Spanish students from the Raleigh or Charlotte airport to the temporary homes where their host families wait to greet them. What a wonderful time! I perceive again our highways as the expansive, infrastructural arteries they are (there’s nothing that compares in France and Spain); I see the rolling hills and tree-lined panoramas for the beautiful landscapes they always will be; I see again the lakes and rivers I always seem to overlook; in short, I see North Carolina as I forget to see it daily. Why can I suddenly see again? Because I’m looking through the eyes and imaginations of those who experience this state for the first time in their lives. It is truly an inspiring experience. This altered way of seeing lingers, too, for the whole month they are here. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, and I’m looking forward to it once again. We hope you’ll join in this experience, and in all the educational, entertaining, life-affirming events to come. Please let us know if you would like to soon. There are a limited number of students, and we try to pair the interests of the host families closely to the interests of their guests.
